AIRPORTS IN ISTANBUL

There are two international airports in Istanbul, located in different sides of the city. The third international airport is under construction on the European side of the city and it's planned to be opened by the end of 2018.

ATATÜRK INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT

The airport is located on the European side and is only half an hour driving distance away from Sultanahmet (Historical Peninsula). It is located 24 kilometers west of the city center (Taksim Square). 

It has a capacity of 20 million passengers per year. The international airport code is IST. Most of the international and local airline companies land at Atatürk Airport.

Tha Atatürk Airport was built between 1949-1953 by the Westinghouse Electric International Company and IG White Engineering Corporation. But the first aerodrome in Istanbul was opened in 1912 for military purposes.

SABIHA GÖKÇEN INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT

The airport is located on the Asian side at a distance of 50 kilometers to Taksim Square (city center) and Sultanahmet (Historical Peninsula). It can take 1.5-2 hours. The airport is not far from the Istanbul Park Formula I race circuit. This airport was built on October 2009 and it has a capacity of 25 million passengers per year.
